W4WS
THE WINSTON-SALEM COURTEOUS OPERATOR'S CLUB
(AKA  WINSTON-SALEM CONTEST CREW)

KG4NEP, WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA

Winston-Salem FirstFest- January 10, 2008

W4WS is the call for the Winston-Salem Contest Crew. Contests have been run from W2DZO for several years, but since 2002 our operations have taken place from our new Multi-Op station at Robert Whitaker KG4NEP's location in Southeast Forsyth County. The new location has given us an opportunity to put up more towers and receive antennas, something that our little yard on Franklin Street was unable to hold. The station is available for our members, or guest ops, and is designed for SO, SO/2R , M/S or M/2.  The lineup at the new W4WS includes the following :

  • 160 meters: 75' Shunt Fed Rohn 25 with full radial system
  • 80 Meters: full size 1/4 wave vertical
  • 40 Meters: 2L Cushcraft 402CD @ 70', 1/4 wave vertical
  • 20 Meters: 5L Hy-Gain Yagi @ 70' , C3 at 75', KT34A fixed SE @ 35', A3S fixed @ 40'
  • 15 Meters: 4 over 4 4L Homebrew Yagis at 75'/45', C3@75'
  • 10 Meters: 3L Delta Loop @ 45', C3@75'
  • Full Writelog logging/networking
  • Yaesu FT1000, FT920, IC706
  • Alpha 374A amp,  Heathkit SB220 amp

The Winston-Salem Courteous Operator's Club was originally founded in 1994 by members of the Forsyth Amateur Radio Club who had a special interest in contesting, as well as visiting Prince's On the Park for pizza, wings and beer after FARC meetings. Membership in the club requests you to be a member of the FARC, OR operate the CQWW SSB contest with our team at least once. (You will then be privy to the Order of The Scepter...)  The vanity call W4WS was received in 1997 with Henry Heidtmann, W2DZO as trustee.  We are affiliated with  CDXA (Carolina DX Association) and many of our members are affiliated with the North Carolina Chapter of The Potomac Valley Radio Club (PVRC). Our club 10-X number (#68632). For information about joining us for a contest, you may email the group at: henry at summitschool.com. Our maiiling address is:
